VIP's Guide to Southern Wyoming™

Rawlins, WYOMING

Serving as the county seat, Rawlins is home to more than half of the people living in Carbon County. It is located 90 miles west of Laramie, 40 miles southwest of Seminoe State Park (see pages 16-17)  and an hour north of the Sierra Madre Mountain Range in south-central Wyoming. The Rawlins Uplift, a distinctive rock formation north of the City, acts as a boundary between the sagebrush prairies of southeastern Wyoming and the Red Desert.

Rawlins is a place where visitors can improve their game at a nationally ranked 18-hole golf course, take aim at the area’s best outdoor shooting complex, tour two museums and explore restaurants and shops in an historic downtown setting. With five walking tours and a new splash pad for kids coming this summer, there’s always something new to experience in Rawlins.

HISTORY

The history of Rawlins begins in 1867 with a thirsty General John A. Rawlins. While in command of troops protecting a survey crew for the First Transcontinental Railroad, General Rawlins expressed a wish for a drink of good, cold water. Scouts were sent to explore the countryside. As they rode west and approached the hills that stand guard over the present city, and they discovered a spring.

General Rawlins declared it was the most refreshing drink he had ever tasted and exclaimed, “If anything is ever named after me, I hope it will be a spring of water.” The settlement of Rawlins Springs was soon established. Later the name was shortened to Rawlins, when the city was incorporated in 1886 and designated the seat of Carbon County.
